Kristina Veasey & Alejandro Ahmed: Capturing the Forest

Presented by In Between Time

Capturing the Forest is an installation and live intervention by acclaimed artists Kristina Veasey (UK) and Alejandro Ahmed (Brazil). Merging sculpture, ceramics, sound, film and movement, this groundbreaking international collaboration explores accessible routes into nature while immersing you in the landscape.

As disabled artists, both Veasey and Ahmed have faced challenges in accessing nature. This artwork is their tribute to the forest, inspired by the experiences of those who love the natural world but may not be able to visit it. Drawing from the vastly different forests of the UK and Brazil, they use design, AI, raw materials, and live broadcast to create a sensory-rich celebration of nature, art, and technology.

From her bedroom, Kristina Veasey invites you to walk through forest clearings, joining her in a peaceful forest-bathing meditation. Veasey also worked with clay, inviting you to touch and smell the clay, creating your own dorodango.

Alejandro Ahmed’s Forest Fiction invites you to contribute your words to a growing forest of imagination.

Capturing the Forest was exhibited from 30 October to Friday 1 November at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (Brighton).

KRISTINA VEASEY
Kristina Veasey’s work is playful and provocative, using installation, film, crafts, and sculpture to explore the commonalities and differences in everyday experiences. As a disabled, neurodivergent woman and activist, intersectionality, identity, and social politics are strong components of her work, which is often influenced by the barriers she faces. Using art as a force for change, Veasey draws on her background as a Social Policy graduate, a Paralympian, and an equality and diversity consultant to create work which is accessible and amplifies unheard voices. Recent works include My Dirty Secret! (Southbank Centre, London), A Complete Basketcase (Focal Point Gallery, Southend), Meander (Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust), and a domestic installation commissioned by ITV Creates.

ALEJANDRO AHMED
Choreographer and dancer Alejandro Ahmed (1971) is the resident Choreographer and Artistic Director of ‘Grupo Cena 11 Cia. de Dança’ (Florianópolis, Brazil), as well as the Artistic Director the São Paulo City Ballet. Ahmed’s work is inspired by the ‘do-it-yourself’ paradigm of the Punk movement and the search for a non-institutionalised type of dance that speaks of the world, with the relationship between dance, science and technology lying at the heart of his work. Grupo Cena 11 is a staple of the modern Brazilian dance, recognised for its bold, hybrid dance style formed from video clips, comics, computers, androgyny, fashion, electronic music, polemics and the contrasts between new and old.

Using engaging cinematography, this video captures elements of the installation artworks, highlighting the mysterious otherworldliness of the forest atmosphere created by the artists. For more context and description of the artworks please listen to the audio description below.
