Pete takes the time to transform one domestic object with another until it reminds us it is still what it always was – a thing of toil and beauty.
‘It is delicate, complex, and intricate; it is unnecessary. It is in essence a confection, and it grows.
Slowly it spreads across the surfaces, adding volume and sugar and texture and nothing else. The larger it is, the more unwieldy and the less you need it. The more maintenance it requires, the greater a struggle there is as it expands.
It exists and grows silently or, perhaps more honestly, it exists within the noise and the conversation already present. Every word spoken is an acknowledgement, a nod to it and to your participation.
It becomes increasingly important.
It is solely reliant on your undertaking and attendance. It cannot outlive you.’

Pete Barrett is a Bristol-based, multidisciplinary artist and librarian. His performance work has been seen often at In Between Time and Arnolfini over the years. Taking place in the publc domain his work is often autobiographical and durational including repetition and concentration and the use of ordinary even domestic materials Pete attaches meaning and embues consequence to the small, the every-day, and the personal.
