We Are Warriors

We Are Warriors is an ever-evolving sound and light installation, a magnificent roar for a fairer, safer world.
Enter a powerful constellation of fireflies, whispers, sighs and lullabies, a tribute to anyone who has been silenced.
Described as ‘awe-inspiring’, ‘raw’, ‘breathtaking’, ‘beautiful’, We Are Warriors reclaims dark spaces. Since 2018, it has been presented in a medieval mine, a palace, a gallery, a theatre, a cave and a garden.
Featuring a spine – tingling composition accompanied by tiny flickering lights ‘like falling into the sky’.
In each location, the audience creates the light – each one a tribute to a significant person in their lives.
In some iterations, the audience is encouraged through workshops to add their voice to the composition, joining a global roar against oppression. The result is a visceral anthem for anyone who has ever felt silenced.
The Idea
We Are Warriors first occupied Bristol’s atmospheric Redcliffe Caves, attracting 1,000 visitors daily.
Since then, it has toured to Arnolfini, Redcliffe Caves, Venice Performance Art Week and Analogue Festival (Sydney, Australia).
It began in 2018 with a programme of workshops by In Between Time and Bristol’s Black women’s playback theatre company Breathing Fire, working with organisations across the city to enable 130 women, girls and trans people (aged 8–80) to unlock their voices.
Participants shared the challenges of raising our voices, and what we still need to fight for. These recorded voices became the basis of the We Are Warriors soundscape.
In 2026, that first constellation becomes a global chorus — travelling, growing brighter, gathering strength as it moves through an international tour.
Thousands Gathered for We Are Warriors in Brighton
In May, We Are Warriors transformed the hidden Cab Road Tunnel beneath Brighton Station into a glowing underground sanctuary of light, sound and shared stories as part of Brighton Festival.
Presented by In Between Time with Dreamy Place and videoclub, the installation invited visitors to place a light in memory of someone whose voice had been silenced. Over the festival run, thousands of people stepped into the tunnel, adding their own dedications to a growing constellation of flickering lights and voices.
The response was overwhelming.
“I didn’t expect to start crying — lovely.”
“So immense, so simple, so moving.”
“You are heard. You are loved.”
“This was exactly what I needed to feel.”
People lingered. Reflected. Shared stories with strangers. Cried. Sat quietly in the dark. Many returned with friends and family to experience it again.
One visitor wrote:
“Only light can bring light in darkness. It is always there (even when we don’t see it).”
The installation also received glowing reviews, with Brighton and Hove News describing it as:
“Beautifully curated and emotionally intelligent… one of the standout installations of Brighton Festival 2026.”
For us, the most powerful part was watching the work grow night after night — each light added by someone choosing to remember, honour, grieve, celebrate or simply pause together.
Brighton marked the launch of the international We Are Warriors tour and we’re so excited for where it travels next.
